We are excited to highlight two of our quarries that have been recognized as Quarry of the Month by Colas USA for May and June 2025. In May, the Richmond Quarry earned this prestigious accolade, followed by Miami River Stone in June. This award is given to the operation with the highest Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) while maintaining a minimum quality threshold.
OEE measures two things:
- Plant Availability: the amount of time a plant is operating vs. the amount of time the plant was scheduled to operate.
- Plant Productivity: the output of the plant while the plant is running vs. the target output for that individual plant.
The Quality Index factors the frequency of samples taken on aggregates produced, along with conformance to specification and consistency of our products. As these are measures of multiple indicators, a full team effort is required to achieve this level of operational performance.
Spotlight on Richmond!
In May, the team at Richmond was awarded “Quarry of the Month” by Colas USA. Starting as a low-performing plant, they received a facelift late last fall, including a cone crusher upgrade and plant rearrangement with a few major conveyors replaced. With the changes, many previous flaws have been corrected, which had led to downtime in different areas of the facility.
These upgrades also increased the production capacity by over 125 tons per hour. This is the first time Richmond has won the Colas USA “Quarry of the Month” award since the contest kicked off in 2023, and the first operation in Colas USA to have successfully gone from the lowest performing plant to the top performing plant!
Next up: Miami River Stone
In June, the aggregates team in Sidney, OH was next to be awarded “Quarry of the Month.” Miami River had high productivity and availability rates during the month, suffering only four hours of downtime, mostly due to material blockage going into the cone crusher.
Maintenance on the processing plant is carefully planned out, with minor items getting addressed during a scheduled maintenance day every two weeks. This is the second win for Miami River, as they were recipients of the award back in July 2023, but there have been a couple new members that have joined the team since then.
