IA Construction Corporation
In March of 2021, IA Construction, a subsidiary of Barrett Industries, was the successful bidder of a large-scale Pennsylvania Department of Transportation contract for a section of Interstate 80. The project included milling and paving of a long section of roadway, structure repairs, and a 72-inch pipe repair.
The contract included many milestone completions with significant liquidated damages and many challenging safety aspects. Construction began in May of 2021 with the bulk of the work having been completed by mid-July 2021, avoiding any potential penalties. The project team included Brett Anderson (Estimator 2) and Cory Wolbert (Project Engineer 3), along with Tracy Timko (Superintendent). Multiple crews of laborers and operators performed the work safely across both day and night shifts.
The Clarion Asphalt Plant, under the supervision of Barry Vandervort (Plant Superintendent), produced the binder, a wearing leveling course, and a stone matrix asphalt (SMA). The SMA material was new to the facility and required several parts to be retrofitted to the plant prior to production.
The milestone completions meant that extra equipment needed to be readily available for any potential breakdowns. Therefore, Gregory Mealy (Shop Manager) prepared his mechanics for these challenges. The final piece of the puzzle was getting the special aggregates to the facility ahead of production to ensure trucks were available for milling and paving operations. Dennis Forbes (Dispatcher) worked closely with the project managers to provide transportation needs successfully.
The project was completed several days ahead of schedule receiving multiple project bonuses for ride quality and joint construction as well as material performance under the direction of Kevin Casper (QA/QC Manager). IA employees not only successfully completed this project but completed it safely.
